Aquaculture, like other animal production systems, relies on the use of antimicrobials to prevent and treat infectious diseases. However, growing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is undermining the effectiveness of these treatments and poses a threat to the sector’s sustainability.
In the face of this challenge, aquaculture production strategies must focus, amongst other measures, on disease prevention to reduce the need for antimicrobials. In this context, the implementation of biosecurity plans is a fundamental pillar in preventing the introduction and spread of pathogens. Furthermore, improving animal welfare plays a key role, as reducing stress enhances animal health and reduces their susceptibility to disease.
WOAH, together with its Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Aquaculture (CASA), is organising a series of webinars to raise awareness of the implementation of these strategies in the Americas.

Who can participate?
Open to all interested participants. In particular, staff from Veterinary Services and Aquatic Animal Health Services, veterinary students, aquaculture producers and all stakeholders in these production systems are invited to take part.
