Our 26th Regional Commission for the Americas Conference took place on 8-9 November. The meeting was held in virtual format and was attended by more than 130 participants.
Regional Conferences aim to facilitate dialogue between the Region’s Delegates, invited experts and key regional partners along with key WOAH staff leading the Organisation’s flagship programmes and initiatives.
During this conference, the most important animal health issues for the region were discussed, including the main challenges for the eradication of African swine fever in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the activities developed in the framework of the GF-TADs, as well as special sessions on One Health, aquatic animal health and animal welfare.
Dr. Monique Eloit, WOAH Director General gave the welcoming remarks: “This Conference is a unique opportunity to collectively discuss the main animal health and welfare concerns of the Region. It is happening at a time when several challenges are faced by our Members such as Transboundary Animal Diseases, emerging diseases, zoonosis and food borne diseases”
Regarding Avian Influenza, the Members expressed their concern about outbreaks in the Americas and proposed to stimulate surveillance in wild and domestic birds.
At the end of the meeting, Ecuador’s proposal to host the 27th Conference of the Regional Commission for the Americas in 2024 was approved.
