Key information on viral haemorrhagic septicaemia

Header

At WOAH in the Americas, we organised an open webinar on Viral Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (VHS) in response to the outbreak reported by Colombia. The meeting brought together experts, National Focal Points, and stakeholders from the public and private sectors to share updated information on the disease, including its characteristics, diagnostic methods, and prevention and control strategies. In addition, the actions implemented at national and regional levels to address the situation and strengthen the response were presented.

Why is this event significant?

The webinar presented scientific information on the disease and Colombia’s response to the outbreak. VHS affects various fish species, particularly in aquaculture systems and natural environments. Caused by a virus, it can lead to high mortality rates, resulting in significant economic losses for the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Furthermore, its impact is not limited to production, as it also poses a risk to aquatic biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems, making it a significant concern for animal health and the sustainable management of aquatic resources.

Objectives of the Webinar

  • Highlight the transparency and reliability of the affected country when reporting on the outbreak situation;
  • Share the expertise of specialists and reference laboratories;
  • Strengthen regional capacity to tackle VHS;
  • Improve preparedness for future outbreaks
