It is estimated that the aquatic animal food supply will have to grow by 13% in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 12% in North America to sustain per capita consumption levels through to 2050.
But infectious diseases can threaten this growth. In this context, the use of antimicrobials is essential to control these diseases while ensuring animal welfare. However, when these medicines are misused or overused, they can contribute to the development of resistant pathogens. These pathogens endanger everyone’s health, as they can be transmitted between animals, humans and plants through the environment. This phenomenon is known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
To kick off the celebrations of the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), the Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Aquaculture (CASA) with the support of the Regional Representation for the Americas is organised a webinar that was attended by over 200 people on 18 November. Under this year’s theme ‘Educate. Advocate. Act Now.’, the webinar was also attended by regional representatives of the quadripartite alliance (FAO, UNEP, WHO and WOAH) and aimed to share the experiences of both the private sector and the Veterinary Services in promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials in aquaculture.
