Promoting harmonisation of veterinary products standards in the Americas

More than 270 representatives of Veterinary Services and the industry gathered in Lima, Peru, from 14 to 17 October to participate in the XXIX CAMEVET Seminar. The goal: to facilitate the harmonisation of standards on the registration and control of veterinary products, ensuring their quality, safety and efficacy.

Antibiotics, diagnostic kits, dietary supplements… all veterinary products must go through an official registration process before being placed on the market. This process aims to ensure their quality, safety and efficacy before they are used in animals. In the framework of the ‘One Health’ approach, this process is also essential for human health, as many veterinary products are part of the agri-food chain.

Harmonising these processes, which include standards, registrations and controls between countries, helps to facilitate international trade in veterinary products by boosting local economies. Created more than 30 years ago, the American Committee for Veterinary Medicines (CAMEVET) is a regional project of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) that seeks to support the harmonisation of regulations between countries.

‘The seminar was an opportunity to exchange knowledge between public and private sector representatives from several countries and, thus, to better understand each other's needs and collaborate in the standardization of processes. At this meeting, the new technical guidelines for the labelling of veterinary products were approved,’ said Dr Maria Esther Pasco, focal point for Peru and chair of the CAMEVET executive board.

This project involves the participation of the focal points responsible for the registration of veterinary products, and the chambers that bring together the industries of the continent as adherent members. They meet annually to discuss technical recommendations on the harmonization and modernization of the countries’ regulations. The last seminar was held from 14 to 17 October in Lima, Peru.

CAMEVET’s continuous work on the harmonisation of standards not only strengthens animal health, but also promotes safe and efficient trade of veterinary products in the Americas. This joint effort between the public and private sector contributes to ensuring that veterinary products meet the highest standards of quality, safety and efficacy. With more than 30 harmonised guidelines, the WOAH-led CAMEVET project continues to consolidate its position as a key pillar in the promotion of animal and human health under the ‘One Health’ approach.
