Dr. Martin Minassian, Technical Assistant of the Regional Representation for the Americas, participated in Peru in the closing meeting of the project financed by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
The meeting, which took place in Lima, Peru, was attended by representatives of the tripartite (FAO, PAHO and WOAH), the Peruvian National Health Institute, the Multisectoral Commission against AMR in Peru, and other international agencies.
The aim of the meeting was to close the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)-funded project “Strengthening global and national surveillance systems by strengthening national
laboratory and workforce capacities for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance”, as well as to the launch of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) activities.
The KOICA-funded project achieved, in its six years of duration and impact on human health, the improvement and harmonisation of laboratory methods for integrated AMR surveillance, increased capacities for surveillance and reporting of antimicrobial consumption, as well as the collection and analysis of collected data for efficient decision making at the hospital level.
Dr Minassian participated in a panel discussion with the other Tripartite representatives, emphasising the importance of concrete actions under the “One Health” approach. He highlighted the role of Veterinary Services in the responsible and prudent use of antimicrobials, as well as the WOAH activities in collecting antimicrobial use data as a tool for decision making, in line with national AMR surveillance plans.
