Animal health specialists from various countries of the Americas met in Panama City to participate in the Workshop in the framework of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for the prevention, control and eradication of African swine fever (ASF).

Organised jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), under the framework of the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs), the workshop aimed to address ASF, share knowledge and establish strategies for its prevention, control and eradication in the region.

The event was attended by 72 representatives from 18 Members of the region, including staff from veterinary services and private sector pig industry associations.

Dr. Catya Martinez, WOAH Sub-Regional Representative for Central America and the Caribbean, participated in the opening of the event and highlighted that this activity responds to the commitment of WOAH and FAO established in the Global Initiative for the control of ASF launched in 2020. This initiative seeks to promote the development of forums between the public and private sectors to strengthen joint and coordinated work to support countries in the region to prevent, control and eradicate this disease.

Dr Martin Minassian, Technical Assistant of WOAH Regional Representation for the Americas, delivered a presentation on the status of PPPs in animal health in the Americas region and encouraged countries to inform about the development of PPPs at national level on WOAH platform.

In addition, the workshop included presentations on different ongoing PPPs involving the pork industry in the participating countries. It also included discussion exercises with the aim of learning about current best practices, identifying relevant actors and challenges, as well as working on the definition of a roadmap for future actions at national level.
