GF-TADs

20th Regional Steering Committee of the GF-TADs for the Americas

Header

The GFTADs Regional Steering Committee for the Americas meeting was held virtually on April 17. The role of the GFTADs as a wellestablished mechanism for regional coordination was highlighted, even in contexts of limited resources. Likewise, the need to strengthen strategic planning, improve interinstitutional coordination, and optimize resource use through synergies between international organizations and countries was emphasized.

Context

In recent years, countries in the Region of the Americas have faced particularly complex health challenges, marked by the emergence and evolution of various high‑priority transboundary diseases, including highly pathogenic avian influenza, African swine fever, classical swine fever, and the New World screwworm. In response to these threats, with the support of WOAH, FAO, and other regional and subregional organisations, multiple prevention, preparedness, and control strategies have been developed and implemented, based both on current international standards and on technical recommendations arising from the various GF‑TADs meetings.

Meeting objectives

  • Strengthen regional planning for 2026 by reviewing achievements, challenges, and lessons learned in the implementation of health actions related to priority transboundary diseases in 2025.
  • Analyze progress and gaps in surveillance, prevention, and control strategies implemented by countries during 2025.
  • Prioritize regional lines of action for 2026, considering capacities, emerging risks, and opportunities for cooperation.
  • Agree on next steps, follow-up mechanisms, and possible avenues for technical support.
