Second meeting of the GF-TADs Standing Group of Experts on Avian Influenza

Header

Global outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry and wild birds have occurred periodically over the past 20 years and have affected different regions of the world. In late 2022, in response to the first outbreaks detected in Central and South America, the GF-TADs Regional Steering Committee for the Americas approved the establishment of the Standing Group of Experts on Avian Influenza (SGE-AI)

From 19 to 21 April, the second meeting of the Standing Group of Experts on Avian Influenza took place in Mexico City with the support of the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (SENASICA).

The meeting was attended by 26 Delegates of the Americas, 3 non-Members of the Americas, 10 representatives of International, Regional and Sub-Regional Organizations and representatives of the private sector.

The aims of the meeting were to:

  • Provide information on existing global and regional platforms, programmes and action plans
  • Present the global and regional avian influenza situation
  • Discuss national strategies and management options implemented in the Americas, focusing on surveillance, prevention, emergency preparedness and response.
  • Discuss safe trade of poultry, wild birds and their products through the implementation of WOAH standards.
  • Identify the main issues and priorities for the development of a regional framework for disease prevention and control in the Americas.

The members of the Standing Group of Experts of the Americas and the participants of the second meeting of the GF-TADs SGE-AI issued the following recommendations
