The second meeting of the standing group of experts on New World Screwworm (NWS) was held on October 9 in a virtual format, with the objective of strengthening regional coordination in light of the epidemiological situation of myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax, a growing threat to animal, human, and wildlife health in the Americas.
The reinfestation of NWS in Central America since 2022 highlighted the urgency of strengthening prevention and control. To achieve coordination among organisations and agencies carrying out actions to address this threat, the Standing Group of Experts on NWS (SGE-NWS) was created under the GF-TADs framework.
Following its first meeting in April 2025, where foundations and priorities were defined, the second session aimed to follow up, review progress, and consolidate sustainable strategies under the ‘One Health’ approach.
The meeting included nominated experts from Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the United States, Mexico, Panama, national veterinary authorities, representatives of international organisations FAO, WOAH, PAHO/PANAFTOSA, OIRSA, IICA, IAEA, CAHFSA, CVP, SG-CAN, reference centers such as COPEG and CENSA, and technical specialists.
